Advocates Raise Awareness of Prison System Across Country

News Channel 12 takes a look at the injustices in the United States prison system.

Activists are marking “Locked in Solidarity National Awareness and Action Day” this week to highlight what they say are injustices in the country’s prison system. It’s the fourth annual observance. At the Recovery House of Worship in Brooklyn Heights, supporters gathered for a panel discussion with the Brooklyn nonprofit Trellis and the Christian Community Development Association. Trellis says the United States accounts for 5 percent of the world’s population and 25 percent of its prisoners.  Among the speakers were police officers, advocacy organizations and former prisoners. They said the goal is to educate, inspire and spur reforms.
